Writer. Author of historical novels set in Montana during our Civil War. Musician long ago on piano and clarinet, classical, Bach freak. About 6 months ago I got so hungry to play music again I began to think what instrument to try. Pianos are too big to cart around, and clarinets would be repeating history. Then the word, “harmonica,” popped into my head. It’s small enough to carry in my purse and after watching a few videos, I realized it has potential to play a wide variety of music. (Buddy Greene playing “Jesu Joy of Man’s Desiring.”) I bought a learner harp, tinkered around for a few weeks but didn’t like the tone. Bought a Hohner MB 364 with solo tuning (recommended and bought on Amazon) because the music store in this little town has limited stock. Now I’m trying to unlearn ancient clarinet habits and learn the techniques of making music with the harmonica. I’ll get there with it eventually because I love it enough to work at it.
