As coincidence will have it, HOHNER Affiliated Customizer Joel Andersson from Sweden is the man who builds harmonicas for his fellow countryman Mike Fall, whose debut album “Born In A Different Time” I reviewed here only a couple of weeks ago. Joel has now released his own debut recording, simply entitled “The Irish Harmonica”.
The album comprises 12 tracks of traditional Irish tunes (many of them in the form of medleys, making a total of 28 pieces in all), performed without any accompaniment except foot stomps and recorded live on a variety of custom harmonicas in several different tunings. All of them are excellent renditions which underline Andersson’s deep familiarity with the genre as well as his mastery of the instrument. His tongue blocked interval progressions and rhythmic chordal accompaniment patterns, accurate tongue switching and well thought out use of the harmonic layout of the various tunings he employs (standard Richter, Easy 3rd and Mixolydian: http://jaharmonicas.com/tunings.html) allow him to perform this wide range of tunes with conviction and elan. His renditions capture the character of the traditional Irish repertoire with its typical embellishments, as does the evocative and atmospheric sound of his harmonica. All tunes are single takes without overdubs or subsequent editing.

Das Album umfasst 12 Instrumentaltitel aus der irischen Tradition, wobei viele der Tracks Medleys aus mehreren Stücken sind. Sie wurden auf einer Reihe Custom Mundharmonikas in verschiedenen Stimmungen live im Studio eingespielt, ohne jegliche Begleitung außer Fußstampfen. Die Interpretationen sind exzellent und unterstreichen nicht nur Anderssons tiefe Kenntnisse des Genres, sondern auch seine Beherrschung des Instruments.
