I received my package with a Marine Band 364/24 Low C and a Bb Golden Melody and I must say, I was able to play it out of the box right away. That includes bending and overblows.
I usually play them consistently over a week or two before i consider any reed gapping or other adjustments as there is a “break in” period. At least that’s what it used to be like back in the 80s and 90s when played diatonics last.
My package was shipped from Germany to Scandinavia and no loose screws (I always check each shipment).
Well that’s nice to hear, thanks for your positive feedback!
The production quality seems to be consistently good at the moment. In comparison to the 1980s and 90s, new tools and improved tolerances mean that the accuracy of the reed and reed plate die stamping is much superior today, improving response and reducing air loss.
Even though there are some who question the necessity of “breaking in” new harps, personally I find that it takes a bit of playing for a new instrument to settle in. Even when OBs work out of the box, they usually become more reliable after being played for a while. Also, the saliva which unavoidably gets into the harmonica helps make it more airtight. So no need to change your approach.
@SteveBaker Thank-you for your reply Steve! I usually gap and offset if needed. One thing I’ve learned is to play it a while first. I’m happy to report that the Golden Melody and Marine Band are still great out of the box.
I want to personally thank you and all involved for the Hohner Service Kit videos. I have both the service and instant workshop kits and it’s the best investment I’ve made, especially for my Chromatics.
also, I have all three of your play along books and audio. You just can’t beat playing along to get you chops up!
Congrats on the new Signature Marine Band! there’s no sound like it and your years and dedication to Hohner are appreciated the world over and that includes me of course! I’ll order one of these as soon as it’s available.
Thanks, I’m glad the Playalongs have been a help! According to the press release the SB Signature harps are available as of now, but I couldn’t find them on the Thomann website. Here in Germany the distributor has them in stock, so I assume they’ll be reaching retailers soon.
